N. J. Benevenga, a nutritional scientist in the Department of Animal Sciences at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison, invented the RatLoft™ in 2003.
The campus Animal Care and Use Committee was insisting that researchers purchase
shoebox cages as a means to reduce abrasions on rats’ feet. The alternative he created has a
perch which nearly every rat used. Dr. Benevenga was so impressed with the results he
